Asbestos cancer is more commonly known as mesothelioma
.
Mesothelioma , the type of cancer most frequently
associated with exposure to asbestos , which is a malignant tumor occurs in the
lining of the lungs , abdomen , and the heart . A diagnosis of mesothelioma is
generally classified as one of three types: pleural mesothelioma occurs in the
lining of the lungs , known as pleural , peritoneal mesothelioma occurs in the
lining of the abdominal cavity , known as the peritoneal and pericardial
mesothelioma which occurs in the wall of the heart , known as the pericardium .
Asbestos , which was used for literally thousands of
years as a fireproof material and insulation has long been linked to the
disease , but not necessarily a cancer until the last 50 years . Once the
asbestos has been classified as a known carcinogen , the Agency for
Environmental Protection and Consumer Product Safety Commission has imposed
strict regulations on its use in commercial and industrial products.
Unfortunately, most companies producing asbestos products were well aware of
the dangers posed by asbestos and continued to expose workers and workers to
harmful asbestos fibers.
Asbestos cancer diagnosis is difficult because of
disease symptoms mimicking those of other diseases .
Diagnosis of asbestos cancer , including diagnosis of
mesothelioma and lung cancer, it can be difficult because the symptoms can
closely mimic those of other smaller respiratory complications. Symptoms such
as shortness of breath , chest pain, chronic cough or may lead doctors to
suspect mesothelioma , especially if the patient has known asbestos exposure
history .
Diagnostic tools include computed tomography and
magnetic resonance imaging for patients where the asbestos cancer is suspected.
In most cases , these imaging pictures will be able to provide an image of the
tumor, a biopsy but likely to be required to determine a definitive diagnosis
of mesothelioma than other lung cancers. In cases where the peritoneal or
pleural effusions were expressed in the patient, the drain thereof and the
extraction of the fluid through pleurocentesis oncologists can allow the fluid
to test for the presence of malignant cells .
The treatment options for asbestos cancer generally
include a combination surgery , chemotherapy and radiation
Depending on the location of the cancer , generally
asbestos malignant tumors can be difficult to resect because the latency period
during which the cancer can often goes unnoticed extend into the period of time
where the tumor grows through its preliminary stages . Advanced cancer ,
particularly those related to asbestos, often not resectable malignant .
Although the diagnosis of asbestos cancer in early stage is rare, certainly
those who are eligible for surgical removal will often resected cancer.
Adjuvant chemotherapy is often administered after surgery in order to complete
the resection .
Pleurectomy Extrapleural and pneumonectomy , both
extended surgeries are often used in the treatment of cancer of the pleural
asbestos . Surgery is much less common in cancer of the peritoneum and
pericardium clever, as the origin of the tumor is difficult to access without
endangering the survival of the patient.
Chemotherapy is the most common mechanism used to
control the treatment of cancer of the asbestos . Drugs like Alimta , cisplatin
and gemcitabine have all been used with varying degrees of effectiveness to
stop or slow the spread of malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Clinical
trials continue to test new drugs and drug cocktails for the management and treatment of asbestos cancer . Recent trends suggest that researchers are
making progress in determining not only approved for malignant pleural mesothelioma,
but also cancer of the peritoneum and pericardium regimens .
Currently, the only chemotherapy approved by the FDA
for asbestos cancer malignant pleural mesothelioma is a combination of Alimta
and cisplatin , administered intravenously , with 21 days between each
subsequent injection. Carcinomas asbestos lung cancer are also treatable with
chemotherapy . Because the incidence of asbestos cancer of this type is much
more common (and not necessarily directly attributable to asbestos exposure ) ,
there are many more options available for chemotherapy patients.
EBRT is popular among patients receiving treatment for cancer of the pleura and peritoneum . Pericardial cancer patients may also use
radiation in the control of their cancer , but lower doses given the proximity
of the core region . Radiation therapy is considered useful for palliative care
and to prevent malignant cells to take in hand again after surgery.
As part of the development of education in the fight
against asbestos cancer by radiotherapy , researchers have begun to use
brachytherapy to control the spread of the tumor mesothelioma and growth .
Brachytherapy is an internal radiation source implanted in the affected area ,
which has shown promising results in clinical studies in reducing the tumor
mass and slower . Each year survival rates ranged from more funding is being
invested in research to evaluate new treatment options. Researchers hope one
day to find a cure for mesothelioma.
Many cancer patients asbestos have managed to collect
compensation from companies responsible for asbestos exposure .
