The Egyptian pyramids are the oldest and only surviving member of the artifacts wonders . Of the 10 pyramids of Giza, the first three are held in high esteem . The first , and largest , was built for the pharaoh Khufu . Known as the Great Pyramid,,,,
The pyramids of Egypt were specially designed as tombs
for pharaohs. They contain mummified bodies of ancient Egyptian kings and their
property with their slaves. This is because the ancient Egyptians believed in
life after death and therefore they must have their goods buried with them.
Designed as tombs for ancient Egyptian kings, the
three pyramids also stored supplies Egyptians believed that kings would need in
the afterlife . The Great Pyramid has a corridor 28 meters tall ( 8.5 meters
high ) called the Great Gallery , which leads to the King's room , a room with
walls of red granite. Grave robbers have left the broken sarcophagus of the
king, too large to pass through the entrance. The smaller Pyramid of Khafre has
440 yards long (402 meters long) causeway by which the priests carried the body
to be mummified Khafre in the Valley of Temples.
There are three known inside the Great Pyramid rooms.
The lower chamber is cut into the rock on which the pyramid was built and was
unfinished . House of the so- called Queen and King's Chamber are higher in the
structure of the pyramid. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the only pyramid in
Egypt known to contain both ascending and descending passages . The main part
of the Giza complex is a setting of buildings that included two mortuary
temples in honor of Khufu (one close to the pyramid and one near the Nile ),
three smaller pyramids for Khufu 's wives , a "satellite" pyramid
even smaller , a raised causeway connecting the two temples, and small mastaba
tombs surrounding the pyramid for nobles One mystery of the construction of the
pyramid is planning. John Romer suggests that they used the same method that
had been used for earlier and later constructions , covering parts of the plan
on the ground at a scale of 1 to 1. He writes that " such a working
diagram would also serve to generate the architecture of the pyramid with a
precision unmatched by any other means.
The King's Chamber is 10.47 meters ( 34.4 feet) from
east to west and 5.234 meters ( 17.17 feet) from north to south . It has a flat
roof 5.974 meters (19.60 ft) above the ground. 0.91 m (3.0 ft) above the ground
, there are two narrow shafts in the north and south walls (one is now filled
by an extractor fan in an attempt to circulate the air in the inside the pyramid . The purpose of these shafts is not clear : they appear to be aligned to
stars or areas of the sky from the north and south, but one of them follows a
dog-leg course through the masonry, indicating the no intention to directly
sight stars through them. They have long been regarded by Egyptologists as
" air " sinks for ventilation, but this idea has now been largely
abandoned in favor of trees used for ritual purposes associated with the ascent
of the spirit of the King of heaven .
The King's Chamber is entirely faced with granite.
Above the roof, which is formed of nine slabs of stone weighing in total about
400 tons , five compartments known as Relieving Chambers. The first four , like
the King's Chamber , have flat roofs formed by the floor of the room above ,
but the final chamber has a pointed roof . Vyse suspected the presence of upper
chambers when he found that he could push a long reed through a crack in the
ceiling of the first chamber. Lower to upper rooms are known as " House of
Davison ", " Wellington Chamber ", " Chamber of Nelson
", " Lady Arbuthnot Chamber " and " Campbell House " .
It is believed that the compartments were intended to safeguard the King's
Chamber of the possibility of a roof collapsing under the weight of the stone
above the Chamber . As the rooms were not meant to be seen, they are not
finished in any way and some of the stones retain the marks painted on them
masons . One of the stones in Campbell House bears a mark , apparently the name
of a team , which includes the only reference in the pyramid of Pharaoh Khufu.
